Keeping Your Card Safe – Tips for the Festive Season

Keeping Your Card Safe – Tips for the Festive Season

The festive season is a time for giving, celebrating, and enjoying those long-awaited moments with family and friends. But it’s also a time when fraudsters become more active — taking advantage of the busy shopping rush both online and in stores.

Whether you’re buying gifts, booking trips, or simply tapping away for the Christmas shop, here are some practical ways to keep your card — and your money — safe this festive season.

1. Shop safely online

Before entering your card details, always check that the website address starts with “https://” and displays a padlock icon. These small details mean the site is secure.

Avoid clicking links from emails or social media ads that look suspicious, and never save your card details on public or shared devices.

2. Keep your card close

When shopping in-store, always keep your card in sight during transactions. Cover your PIN at ATMs and payment terminals, and if a machine looks damaged or unusual, use another one.

3. Don’t overshare

No legitimate organisation will ever ask for your full card details, PIN, or online banking passwords via text, email, or phone call. If you receive an unexpected request — even if it looks official — stop and report it straight away.

4. Keep an eye on your card through your app

Use your credit union card app to monitor transactions in real time and stay on top of your spending. Regularly checking your activity helps you spot any unusual payments quickly — so you can report them before it’s too late.

5. Report suspicious activity immediately

If something doesn’t look right on your account or you suspect fraudulent activity, contact Kilrush Credit Union or Current Account 24/7 card services straight away.
