Rewilding for Wellbeing: A Community ESG Project Taking Root in Kilrush
This Earth Day (22nd April), Kilrush Credit Union is proud to share the launch of a new Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiative that brings together community, wellbeing and biodiversity in a very practical way.
Our Community Nursing Home Rewilding & Wellbeing Project focuses on transforming underused garden spaces at Clarecare’s new Day Centre in Kilrush into accessible, pollinator‑friendly, biodiverse gardens — with clients, staff, community partners and Credit Union volunteers all playing a part.
As a member‑owned organisation, our role extends beyond providing financial services. It’s about supporting the long‑term wellbeing of the people and places that make Kilrush what it is.
Supporting Wellbeing Through Nature
At the heart of this project are the clients who will enjoy and engage with these spaces every day.
Through gentle, inclusive gardening activities such as sowing seeds, planting, observing seasonal change and enjoying time outdoors, the project aims to support:
- Improved wellbeing and mood
- Meaningful activity and a sense of purpose
- Social connection and reduced isolation
- Accessible outdoor enjoyment for clients of all abilities
Raised beds, seating and adapted planting methods ensure the gardens can be enjoyed safely and comfortably, with activities always guided by carers and participation entirely voluntary.
Rewilding Kilrush, One Space at a Time
From an environmental perspective, the project focuses on native Irish wildflowers, grasses and trees, carefully chosen to suit County Clare’s local conditions.
These rewilded spaces will:
- Support bees, butterflies and other pollinators
- Improve biodiversity within the town
- Enhance soil health and water absorption
- Reduce long‑term maintenance and mowing
- Create small but valuable “stepping stones” for nature in Kilrush
While modest in scale, projects like this can deliver visible environmental benefits within a single growing season, with impact increasing year on year.
A Practical ESG Project Aligned With Our Values
This initiative strongly reflects Kilrush Credit Union’s ESG commitments:
- Environmental: Biodiversity, sustainable land use and climate‑conscious choices
- Social: Wellbeing, inclusion, dignity and community connection
- Governance: A low‑risk, well‑managed project with clear outcomes and transparent reporting
Delivered as a low‑cost pilot with staff volunteering and local collaboration, the project represents strong social and environmental return for a modest investment.
Community Collaboration at Its Core
This project is rooted in local partnership and collaboration, bringing together people with shared values and a love for place.
With murals by Brian from Corlann, handcrafted benches from the team at WoodWebs, and biodiverse planting support from Vandeleur Gardens, this initiative is a true example of community in action — combining creativity, craftsmanship and care for nature in a way that benefits everyone. 🌱
We’re delighted to be working alongside Clarecare carers, local volunteers and local charities, whose local knowledge and experience help ensure the project remains practical, respectful and firmly grounded in the Kilrush community.
All visibility around the project will continue to be consent‑based, people‑focused and community‑first, celebrating genuine impact rather than promotion.
Growing Together
As planting progresses and the gardens begin to bloom, we’ll be sharing updates on how the project is developing — from wildflowers taking hold to wildlife returning and clients enjoying these renewed spaces.
This Earth Day, we’re reminded that small local actions can create meaningful change, especially when people, nature and community come together.
