What Is a Nomination — And Why Should You Have One?
When you open a Credit Union account, you’re making a smart choice to take control of your financial future. But one important step that’s often overlooked is completing a Nomination Form — a simple yet powerful instruction that lets you decide who should receive your Credit Union savings in the event of your death.
Here’s everything you need to know about how nominations work, why they matter, and how easy it is to set one up or review an existing one.
What is a nomination?
A nomination is a legally binding document that tells Kilrush Credit Union who you want to receive your savings and any insurance benefits (if applicable) — up to €27,000 — after your death. It’s one of the easiest ways to ensure your money goes to the right person or people without delays or legal complications.
Who can I nominate?
You can nominate anyone — a family member, friend, or even a group of people. You’re not limited to next of kin or legal heirs. It’s your choice.
Can I change my nomination?
Yes, and we recommend that you review it regularly, especially if your circumstances change. You can update your nomination at any time by simply completing a new Nomination Form with us.
Keep in mind:
If the person you nominated passes away, your nomination becomes invalid.
If you get married, your previous nomination is automatically revoked.
Divorce or separation does not automatically change a nomination — you must update it yourself.
Not sure if you have one in place? Just ask.
Our team is always happy to check if you’ve completed a nomination. We can confirm who your current nominee is or help you complete or update your form. It only takes a few minutes, and we’ll guide you through it with no fuss.
What if I opened my account as a child?
If your account was opened while you were under 16, you wouldn’t have completed a Nomination Form at that time. Once you turn 16, you become eligible to complete one, and we encourage you to do so.
